“You have the woods. We can’t walk to the woods every time we need to eliminate. And there are hundreds of men and boys here, Tarin.”

Tarin shrugged, and yelped as Garrick swatted him.

“Tarin, respect the Healer. Listen -- did you ever go to the lake when the geese were flocking?”

Tarin nodded reluctantly. He knew what Garrick meant. That many creatures in one place left scat everywhere. He wriggled under Garrick’s massage.

“But men scat where they live,” he protested.

“Punishment duty for cadets is to take the buckets away and bury them. Tarin, we don’t like it either, but water is too precious and hard to transport to use as the Before Times buildings were designed.”
